Call to Mindfulness
We, the community of Hillhurst United Church (HUC), embrace our role in living out our values of radical hospitality, social justice and spirituality and our responsibility for God’s creation. We acknowledge our position of privilege and recognize our luxury of choice that many in Calgary, in Canada and the larger world do not have. As such, we faithfully agree to do the following actions:
Minimize our use of water.
Water is a finite gift from God. Over one billion people in the world lack access to safe drinking water. Municipal water takes energy to treat, pump, and treat again as wastewater. As such, HUC strives to reduce the amount of water used in our building.
Reduce our electricity use.
Over one quarter of the world lacks access to electricity, while Canada is among the highest users of electricity in the world. Where possible, HUC will lessen our electricity use.
Diminish our carbon footprint.
Climate change will disproportionately impact the poor and the marginalized of the world. At HUC, we endeavour to reduce our carbon emissions.
Reduce our production of waste.
God’s creation must absorb what we discard. We commit to the 4 R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle, rethink.
Phase out the use of harmful chemicals.
Our bodies and our environment are exposed to toxic chemicals everyday. HUC strives to be a place that both heals the spirit and is free from harsh chemicals.
Encourage use of local, seasonal, organic and fair-trade food.
We seek to nourish our bodies with food that is, where possible, locally produced, is free of harmful chemicals, and does not exploit farmers.
