    Church and Building Administrator
    Part-time Staff Position

Hillhurst United Church is in need of a new staff member on its team to be an integral part of the continued growth of this faith community. This seven-day-a-week church resides in a building over 100 years old, adjoining an annex of church administration and community space. A parent-cooperative childcare facility, local school, community groups, not-for-profit organizations, and arts & performance groups enjoy the use of our space on a regular and occasional basis.

As our congregation, programs, and facility-use needs have grown, so has the need for staff resources to sustain our journey and alignment with our core values of radical hospitality, spirituality and social justice. This position will have varied duties ranging from ‘hands-on’ supervision of facility operations to church administration duties related to data base input and general church communications with its volunteers, tenants, community partners and congregants.

If you're interested in learning more about an opportunity to join our team of staff and contract associates, check out the full description and application details here.

Second Sunday Morning Service - Catch "The 9:05 Express"

Did you know we are starting a 2nd Sunday morning service?

“The 9:05 Express” starts March 18 - a casual service of song, prayer and reflection. If you want an earlier time and a shorter service that leaves time in your morning for Sunday recreation, “The 9:05” is for you. John will be preaching, and Sheena will lead the children in faith exploration. Nursery care will also be available. All are welcome but to ensure its success, we would like 20 people to sign up for this service from now through June. Contact the office here if you would like to give the 9:05 a try!

    Religious Refugees

    February 27, March 5, 12 (Mondays, from 7-9)

Many of you in our community come from different faith traditions. You are here for various reasons, but some of you feel like “refugees” from your previous churches or religions. Others have been members of the United Church but are not resonating with the things they learned as a child. Some of us have no faith tradition in our background. Perhaps you are hearing and struggling with different ideas about God, the Bible, Jesus, and the place of faith in your life. Over three evenings, we will share our stories of spiritual awakening, discuss how to read the Bible in an affirming way, explore who God is to us, and how we journey with Jesus. Led by Joanne Anquist (who was raised in a conservative Christian community).

February 27 - “What Kind of a Christian Are You Anyway?”

There isn’t just one path to being a “Follower of the Way.” We’ll look at different Christian traditions, share stories of faith dislocation, and try to crystalize what Christianity is in our context. Gregory J. Riley’s book “One Jesus, Many Christ’s” will frame our discussion.

    March 5 - “Baggage-Free Bible”

The Bible is said to be the “Word of God”, but has so many stories and sayings that are offensive to our understanding, or our intellect. What do we do with the “Good Book” when it’s not so good? Can we reclaim the Bible in a way that doesn’t compromise our progressive faith?  We’ll talk about the different types of books in the Bible, and learn how to read in context to find the ultimate meaning that applies to our modern lives…or not! Karen Armstrong’s book “The Bible: A Biography” will provide the context.

March 12 - “I’ve Looked at Faith from Both Sides Now”

Some of the beliefs and rituals of our early faith still comfort us, and sometimes our emerging faith seems to lack substance or conviction. How do we embrace God so that wonder and mystery inspires our living? Can we “share” our faith with others with integrity? Will we ever be at home again? Using Song and ritual as touchstones, we’ll share stories of “God Moments” that ground our faith.

You are encourage to attend all three but if you can only come to one, please do. Register here.

Don’t worry about not knowing what to do. There are straightforward instructions to guide you through and we even offer training. Once you get one ‘coffee duty’ under your belt, it’s a snap! You will definitely be appreciated as folks sip their first cup of morning java.
