Hillhurst United Outreach Committee
Inspired by the words and actions of Jesus, the Outreach committee addresses issues of social justice and the environment through education, advocacy, and action with the intention of fostering spiritual growth and nurturing real transformation in the local and global community.
Call to Mindfulness - Your Opinion Wanted
The Outreach Committee is creating a "Call to Mindfulness" that shares our environmental goals. This Sunday (Feb 12), members of the Outreach Committee will be in the gym during lunch to gather feedback from you. Feel free to stop by and share your thoughts!
Social Justice
A just society is one where each member has the opportunity to develop spiritually, to pursue dreams and to meaningfully contribute to the growth and development of the community. In this definition, we think of society as local (Hillhurst, Calgary, Alberta and Canada) and global (low-income countries, high-income countries, north, south, east and west). While we are a long way from considering the whole world as a “just society”, we will strive toward this vision one step at a time.
Inn From the Cold
Inn From the Cold has been an ongoing commitment of HUC in an effort to help alleviate the immediate misery of families who find themselves homeless.
Organized citywide by the non-profit organization, Inn From the Cold, each member congregation is charged with organizing the overnight stay for families once monthly. Opportunities range from set up and tear down to meal prep and serving along with helping our two long-time organizers in the monthly scheduling.

Hillhurst hosts Inn From The Cold on the third weekend of every month. Families and adults are welcome as volunteers! There are many different volunteer shifts available. Contact us here to sign up!
For more information see the Inn from the Cold web site.
Interfaith Food Bank
Hillhurst has a pick up for the Food Bank every third Sunday of the month. Bring your non-perishables to church!
Hillhurst United participates in the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank, a charitable organization whose mission is to provide quality emergency food to those in need. You can drop off food anytime, although the third Sunday of every month has been designated Food Bank Donation Day. The Food Bank donation box is in the back of the sanctuary in the western entrance hall.

Mission and Service Fund - Involved in our Global Community
In the United Church of Canada, we decide together what mission and ministry to support. We also pool our financial resources to support this work. This pool of money is called the Mission and Service Fund. It is made up of voluntary gifts and together we use it to fund our worship, our church organization, our ministry, and God’s mission.
The M&S Fund is the only fund in which members and friends of the United Church pool their givings. Gifts are also given by members to their local church, but it is through the Mission and Service Fund that we collectively live our creed "to be the Church, to celebrate God's presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, and to seek justice and resist evil."
M&S work includes ministry support, theological colleges, presbyteries and Conferences, core funding to 170 churches, chaplaincies, overseas personnel, global work, outreach work in Canada, justice and environmental advocacy, ecumenical partnership, partnership overseas, and the list goes on.
Also, each year emergency funds are allocated in the budget from the Mission and Service Fund for response to emergency needs in countries of the global South. Having such a fund on hand enables the United Church to respond rapidly when needs are critical. In addition to the Mission and Service Fund "emergencies" budget, we also regularly draw on United Church equity in the Canadian Foodgrains Bank to respond to critical food needs in other countries.
Throughout the year, we at Hillhurst have special services and events where we promote the work of the M&S Fund and have opportunities to give financially. You can give to the M&S Fund anytime, directly through our church, either online, or at our worship service. To learn more about the M&S Fund and how you can be involved, click here.
